As part of your driving test you will asked 2 of the questions below which are to do with vehicle safety.

As these are asked at the start of your test make sure you know the answer's as getting them right would get you off to a good start.

Q1. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check the engine oil level

A. Open the bonnet and Identify the Dipstick and say " I would take the dipstick out, wipe it clean, put it back into the housing, take it out again and make sure the oil level is between minimum and maximum"

Q2. Open the bonnet, identify the engine coolant reservoir and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.

A. Open the bonnet and identify the coolant reservoir and the coolant should be up to the maximum mark

Q3. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

A. Open the bonnet, identify the Brake fluid reservoir and make sure the brake fluid level is between minimum and maximum

Q4.Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.

A. Open the Bonnet, identify the windscreen washer reservoir, open the lid and check to see if there is sufficient water/solution

Q5. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.

A. Demonstrate by pulling on the Handbrake, if there is tension and resistance when it is fully pulled up it is working correctly. If you are able to pull the handbrake up and don't feel any resistance then it needs checking

Q6 . Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

A. Show me. Before you start the engine gently pull the steering wheel to one side. when you start the engine and the PAS kicks in the steering should move slightly to one side

A. Tell me. " As I move off and turn the steering wheel, if it is heavy to turn then the PAS isn't working correctly"

Q7. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).

A. Simply press the horn which is located on the steering wheel

Q8. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.

A. Open the door, sit in the car, make sure the gears are in neutral, turn on the ignition, put on the indicators then walk round and check both front and rear indicator lights are working. Then put the other side on and check them too.

Q9.Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car .

A. If the examiner wants to check the brake lights then sit in the car, make sure the gears are in neutral, turn on the ignition, and press the brake pedal and the examiner will check the brake lights.

A. If the examiner asks you how you would check the brake lights then you would reply " I would get a friend to check while I apply the brakes or I would look for reflections in something behind me, for example a car, van, or window

Q10. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

A. "As I move away I would apply the brakes, if they feel soft or spongy or the car doesn't stop in a straight line, then I would get them checked"

Q11. Show me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working.

A. Open the door, turn on the side and headlights then walk round the car checking all 6 bulbs are working correctly

Q12. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

A " I would find the information in the users handbook, When the tyres are cold I would remove the dust cap, use a reliable tyre pressure gauge, check the pressure and if it is ok I would put the dust cap back on. Not forgetting to check the spare"

Q13. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road .

A. "I would check the tyres for cuts and bulges and the tread is a minimum of 1.6mm across the middle three quarters of the breadth and all the way round the circumference"

 

 

Q14. Show me how you would check the indictor bulbs are working?

A. Open the door and put the hazard warning lights on and walk round and check the indicator bulbs are all working
